Why no system beats the house
Almost every bet in a casino pays less than its true odds; the few that pay true odds (craps odds) can only be placed alongside a bet that does not. Betting patterns, streaks and "due" numbers do not change that: each spin, roll or hand starts fresh, and the edge applies to every dollar you put on a bet that carries it. Basic strategy only reduces how much blackjack costs on average.
Simple limits
- Decide the amount you can afford to lose before you go, and treat it as the price of the evening.
- Set a time limit; the average cost grows with every hour.
- Never chase losses or borrow to play.
- Do not gamble to fix money problems, or when upset, tired or drinking.
Signs to take seriously
Spending more than planned, hiding it, feeling restless when not playing, or gambling to win back losses. Ohio and many other states run voluntary exclusion programs for casinos; the helplines above can explain how they work where you live.
